The first live incarnation of my Third Eye project takes place at London’s Cafe Oto on Wednesday January 25, following the Third Eye TV streaming event in November 2021. To celebrate Glasgow’s pioneering arts centre (now the CCA), I’ll be presenting archival video of Julius Eastman (as I understand it, one of only two films of the great composer in existence), Derek Bailey, Brotherhood of Breath and local musicians Tom McGrath and George Lyle, filmed in Glasgow in the 1970s by the Third Eye team. It’s a fantastic opportunity to see this rare footage of jazz, improvised and experimental music on the big screen, blasting through the Oto PA (the original sound has been cleaned up by composer Mariam Rezaei). There will also be live improvised music responses to the archive from contemporary Glasgow-based musicians Tony Bevan (solo saxophone) and Kapil Seshasayee and Diljeet Kaur Bhachu.
